Welcome to the new vision of the National Lifers of America, Inc
Our new vision for the National Lifers of America, Inc. (NLA) is to legitimize the organization becoming an influential voice in Michigan for criminal justice reform and social justice work. With the launch of our new Social Media Platform we are introducing the NLA and the work we do to society. We are a voice from behind the barbed wire fences of the Michigan prison system. We are educated men and women who are rehabilitated and who are contributing viable solutions to end mass incarceration in Michigan by fixing a broken, antiquated criminal justice system that keeps so many of us in prison for decades and until death.
As a person who is sentenced to life without the possibility of parole (LWOP), I have served over 30 years in prison, since the age of 19, for a conviction of aiding and abetting felony murder in 1993. In my case, the principal defendant, who fired the fatal shot, was convicted of a lesser included offense and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
(Click here and here to read retired Judge Sharon Tevis Finch's 2 page letter to the Michigan Governor and Parole Board asking for Jamie Meade's release.)
I am just one example of a fundamentally unfair sentence in Michigan. There are hundreds of men and women who have served 20, 30, 40, and even 50 years in prison. Keeping men and women in prison for decades, or until they die, does not make society safer, in fact, it is more harmful.
This is why we in the NLA are supporting Second Look Sentencing, Ending JLWOP, and Good Time legislation in Michigan. Please join us in our efforts to change Michigan's broken and antiquated criminal justice system finally bringing an end to mass incarceration in our Great State.
